Updating a Brick Fireplace for Less Than $20!

By Barbara Bussey | August 13, 2014 |

Well, hello there! Today, I thought I would give you a peek inside the new Tahoe house! Remember, I told you about the curse of wallpaper, from the 80’s? Well, here’s a shot of the wallpaper, in the largest bedroom, upstairs. But, let’s forget about the rolls and rolls of wallpaper that need to be removed. Pretend it isn’t there! The red brick fireplace is a nice feature in the room, but I wasn’t crazy about the red part. So, I figured I had nothing to lose and decided to paint it. I had heard from the milk painting crowd…

Furniture Painting Basics, Featuring Amy Howard’s One Step

By Barbara Bussey | August 7, 2014 |

I’ve introduced a new “one-hour class”, covering the basics of furniture painting, with chalk style paint. Tonight was the first class. Boy, did I underestimate the time required. One hour turned into two and a half! What was I thinking? Oh well, we had a lot of fun! I like the concept of using old cabinet doors, to practice on…making a chalk board, that might be of use! I’ve taken and taught classes where you leave with several pretty moldings… But what can you do with pretty moldings? At least this way, the effort might be put to use! I…

Milk Painted Empire Dresser

By Barbara Bussey | August 5, 2014 |

Mable, is this week’s milk paint “masterpiece”. I use the term masterpiece lightly, because my milk paint projects are never perfect. Milk paint has its quirks. Heck, so do I! But I love it just the same. I thought “Mable” was a fitting name for this old girl, because like the Empire dressers I’ve known, have all been sturdy, yet stylish. Marian, aka: Miss Mustard Seed, painted this beautiful Empire dresser, just as she got her milk paint line rolling. Another beauty! In fact, the very first piece I ever painted with milk paint, was an Empire dresser, which I…

Our new lake-front restoration project!

By Barbara Bussey | August 4, 2014 |

Hello! Having grown up in Northern California, we spent summers at Lake Tahoe, thanks to our parents. In fact, since I could drive as a teenager, I would alternate weeks at home and at the cabin, with my dear younger sister and brother. I had two jobs. Feeding my younger sibs and getting a tan. I had Hamburger Helper figured out. Getting the tan was more time consuming! The old cabin, built in the 40’s was bullet proof! It took every possible form of abuse for the forty years it was in our family, before we tore it down and…

Customizing Milk Paint Colors & Trying MMS Transfer Gel

By Barbara Bussey | July 30, 2014 |

One of the things I love about Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint, is how you can mix your own custom colors. These two tables were painted with: 1 T of Eulalies Sky 1 T of Luckett’s Green 2 T of Grain Sack 1/2 C of Bonding Agent Mixed with cool water to create a beautiful minty color. Just 4 tablespoons of milk paint, with bonding agent, allowed us to apply 2 coats of paint to these two tables! We always put 3 tablespoons of milk paint in each of our sample packs, for $6.50, by the way, so it goes…

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

By Barbara Bussey | July 23, 2014 |

When it comes to painting furniture, I often find myself, knee-deep, stuck in my comfort zone. . How about you? I play it safe, sticking to the same grays, beiges and aquas. I think I need to choose neutrals that will appeal to the most people. But I have to remind myself about the hot pink desk, that Bob sprayed for me. It was adorable, with a matching chair and fabric. Yes, it sold! This Davenport desk sold quickly, for several reasons. For one, it was such a unique piece of furniture. I also think that people were drawn to…
