Rules to Shop By August 20, 2011
Before heading out to your nearby HomeGoods, for some afternoon entertainment, keep a few things in mind. Marshall’s, TJ Max and the like, provide wonderful fun! They’re counting on your impulse shopping decisions to kick in. But don’t fall for it, when the little devil, sitting on your shoulder says, “Oh, lookie! Isn’t that cute? And it’s only $19.99!” Because, pretty soon, you’ll end up with a house that looks like it’s filled with $19.99 clutter. The same clutter you’ll be carting off to a garage sale or Goodwill, before you know it!
Rule #1: Start and stick with a plan.
Rule #2: Don’t buy it just because its cheap.
Rule #3: Always buy what you love and the best quality you can afford.
Rule #4: If you enjoy a “collected” look, one that looks to have been passed down through the generations, shop vintage and antique stores in your area. You’ll get great value for your dollar.
Rule #5: It’s ok to mix old with new. In fact, it’s a good thing.
Rule #6: Avoid buying pieces that can’t be returned. Many vintage shops will give you a 24 hour return policy, if you ask.
Above all, remember rules # 2 & 3!
In this arrangement, the green “ball”, silver figure, to the right of the urn, and the lantern, were purchased at big discount retailers. The fun for me is mixing and arranging them with my older “treasures”.
Hope you have some great fun today and say hello to the lady at Tuesday Morning for me!
Cheers!
If only I could follow those rules!
I know… It’s easier said than done!
What great tips, Barbara! Don’t buy it just because it’s cheap! I had to post this on my FaceBook business page: http://facebook.com/thedecorologist
Thanks, Dear!
You’re a doll! I’m in the process of firing up the Facebook business page. I’ll be sure to learn how to return the favor!
