Milk Paint Monday February 22, 2015
Way back before Christmas, Mr. Wonderful surprised me with this Craig’s list find. How sweet was that? He knows I love curves and turns, and knew I would love this table and 4 chairs! The table even has a leaf!
Of all the dining room tables I’ve found, none ever had their leaf(s)! Can you imagine all the the orphaned table parts, just floating around the universe?
I may, or may not, end up in the burning fires of hell, for all the evil thoughts I had, while painting these lovely chairs.
We started out with Amy Howard’s chalk base paint, after a good cleaning, followed by Schloss. No, that isn’t a side dish! It’s a new Miss Mustard Seed’s European color!
The four oak chairs have at least four coats of paint on them, plus white wax, as we attempted to create a white-washed look on both the chairs and table.
The legs were painted in Scloss and then, once dry, we randomly applied hemp oil, so that part of the following coat of Mora, (lighter) would chip off, to reveal the darker color underneath. Brilliant, eh?!
The table top needed to have a heavy coat of varnish stripped, since it was peeling off. Don’t you just love stripping furniture? If you’ve never done it, believe me, don’t start now! Thankfully, we do very little of it!
Don’t miss the newly covered chair seats! The fabric is a very pretty tan and charcoal French script. Nice and neutral. Just don’t ask me to translate the French into English!
Oh, wait! The translation is coming to me! It’s magic!
It says…hold on now…let me get this right! It says, “Barbara and the girls, lovingly put in 238 hours, to carefully restore this lovely table and chairs. Call the shop, or stop by tomorrow, if you’d like to see it, in person!”
There! That sounds about right!
Have a wonderful Monday!
P.S.: This is the last week of the ever-popular 2 for 1 milk paint sample special, on until the end of the month, through our on-line shop!
Don’t you just wonder what kind of alternate life those missing leaves are living? Oh, I’ve stripped a milk paint table and chairs from the 40’s…not a fun job at all. After many hours of scrapping with a very toxic stripper, I turned it over to a professional who took a dentist’s pick to scrap all the paint out of the wood. Then it was professionally stained…it was gorgeous….wish I still had it! You did a remarkable job on your table…it was worth all of the 238 hours! 😉
Oh, the things we’ve gotten rid of and then regretted! My list is long, but it made sense at the time! (But please…no more stripping!) Are you snowed in back there, in the north east? I can’t believe some of the pictures I’ve seen! Stay warm and thanks for being so sweet, to say hi!
Hi Barbara
Are u selling any of the MMS products in the store anymore? Or just on-line?
Been thinking of making a trip to your store to possibly get sample of new colors and/or paint mixer stick etc
Thanks!
