(Is “Word Verification” Really Necessary?) My Son’s Wedding Day September 15, 2011
I’ve been part of the design Blogger’s community for about a year now and wonder why many bloggers require you to copy letters in a “Word Verification” system. It never fails that my laptop/iPad or phone gets great joy, correcting the meaningless letters I copy into the word verification box, causing me to have to re-type the “word”. Then, once I have successfully copied the letters, it tells me that my comment will show up once approved.
Now, maybe I’m being extra grouchy, sitting in the airport, waiting for my flight that’s been delayed for two hours, but I digress. Is there really that much spam that bloggers need to weed out the rif-raff, with this thoroughly annoying system? I love all the blogs I read, despite this minor p.i.t.a. feature. I’m just saying…
ON A HAPPIER NOTE…
My son, my first-born sailor, Andrew, is now a married man! He married the very delightful Jessica, who graduated from U.C. Davis in June and is studying for the L-Sat test, to attend law school. They had a short and sweet ceremony yesterday afternoon, with just the parents, and have moved into a tiny little pre-war honeymoon apartment near the beach. I hope and pray that God shines down on them with luck, love and good fortune, for the rest of their years!
I was tipped off a while ago that “word verification” was not necessary, so I never use it on my blog and hate to have to use it on others.
Congrats on the new daughter-in-law. They look terribly happy.
I’ve also heard that it discourages people from leaving comments and who wants that? And thanks for the kind words about Andrew and Jessica. Yes, they are so happy! I hope they stay that way!
I have had my verification turned off for quite a while now but more and more often I am getting spam…I hope I don’t have to turn it back on again! More importantly, congratulations! They look like a very happy couple!
Congratulations to your son and your family. Wow-a lot of milestones for your children this year. I wish them th best.
To answer your question in the first part of your email, absolutely YES there is a lot of spam to warrant word verification. You would be surprised at all the spam that is received once that protection is turned off. You have spam protection working right now on your site in the background but every site works differently and sometimes that extra spam control on the front end.
See I do read your posts 🙂
My dear tech-supporter, I’m sure they help, but I feel like I’m being tested, every time I have to do it!
Wow! Congratulations to Andrew and Jessica. They are really a beautiful couple. I also add to your prayers that they have a very long and happy life together. And thank goodness they invited the ‘rents! You would be really grouchy if you didn’t get to witness the big day, wouldn’t you?? Congratulations to all.
Thanks, Mrs. Kick! Yes, this year will not be soon forgotten! No more “milestones”, please…at least for a while!
I have never had word verification on, and almost never get spam, so ot is hard to believe it is really necessary.
Congratulations and very best wishes to the lovely newlyweds!
Stacy
Thank you, Stacy! By the way, I got your mascara, but still don’t have your eyelashes! What can I say…I tried! 🙂
