DIY Project Fiasco March 29, 2012

Is there anything in your home that bugs you, every time you look at it? I see my “thing” every day, when I go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning. For ten years. It’s the ceiling fan in our bedroom, complete with polished brass. The problem for me is the polished brass.

Yes, I know many of you would suggest replacing the whole darn thing with a gorgeous chandelier, but I live for air circulation in the summer months! So, it stays.

During my last trip to Home Depot, I saw replacement brackets for fans and thought it would be a breeze to change from brass to white trim. Not. It turns out that HD does not carry a universal size, so I could either check directly with Casablanca, or whip out a spray can and try my luck. I will probably opt for the latter.

Mr. Wonderful had a fit when he came home. He doesn’t have a fit often, thankfully (or we wouldn’t be able to call him Mr. Wonderful!) but when I removed the ceiling “collar”, the fan was left hanging by a couple of wires!

At this point I knew I had surpassed my area of specialty. (fast and easy)

So, now, I have wires to greet me in the morning. Not sure which was worse.

Well, stay tuned for “As the Fan Turns”!

May the sun shine on your shoulder, this weekend, and always!

You are too funny! I couldn’t quit laughing and it wasn’t at you, it was at the fan just hanging there by the wires. We just put in new ceiling fans in two of our rooms last year and I know what you mean about needing it in the heat. They do make fans now that are a little nicer and I can live with them if I’m cooled.

    At least you tried.

I do love having the ceiling fan in my bedroom! The others have been taken down. Funny story: I was seeing a man who thought he was Mr Fixer Upper; came home one day from work and there were two hall lights hanging from their wires in the ceiling and in my bedroom he tried to put on a Dimmer switch; the wires were all hanging out from the wall. He never finished whatever he started. We all laugh about it now.

No he did not turn into my Mr Wonderful!

You are one busy bee! I’m impressed you tried to tackle that on your own !
Kudos to you! As I was looking at your pics, I noticed your paint color…. I like it! Do you know what color it is? I’m having major commitment issues over paint colors! I have big painted poster boards all over the house!
    I’m so frustrated! Thx!

      Hi Kevin,
You should have seen all the testing I did, when we did the remodel! Anyway, that was five years ago and I’m still happy with it all. The color is Dunn Edwards, Floating Feather #6142. I actually had the color done in Venetian plaster, in the master, but have it elsewhere in a regular paint finish and it’s just as nice. The whole series is great. Good luck!

Thank you… I’m going to get a sample ! I have been using Benjamin’s Moore colors, but no luck so far!
Btw ..did you use it all over your house? I’m tring to simplify… With just a variations for baths and dining room!
        Thx again!
