Craving a Beautiful Closet May 31, 2012
There must be some serious organizing happening in Blogland! I just saw that Kathysue, at Good Life of Design, had a very in-depth closet organization tutorial Thursday. I admire her organizational skills, but have not gotten to that level of perfection, yet! There’s still hope!
Now, normally (yeah, sure!) I don’t let things get quite this bad. I hadn’t really unpacked properly last month and things just got stuffed, here and there.
So I decided to share with you the down-and-dirty-closet-organization-tutorial-by-Barbara! It’s nothing more than making piles and folding. Oh, there’s also the “gotta-go” pile.
Mr. Wonderful is stressing a bit about having to do some major updating in here, before the wood floors are installed in 2 weeks. Eventually, the open shelves are going to be converted into lower drawers and upper cabinets, with a countertop in-between. In the mean time, I thought this would be a good time to purge and stack.
All I do is organize by type, (jeans, yoga pants, t-shirts, etc.). No color coding here. The big basket is for scarves. I have so many scarves, I could open a scarf store, but that’s in another story.
…and I use belt hangers for the scarves I have hanging. Now that I have my shelves tackled, I’ll work on the hanging items. All of the clothes are going to have to go downstairs soon, so I’m going to get my exercise!
I repeated the exercise on Mr. Wonderful’s side. He’s got a couple of secret stash-piles, that I dare not touch! Need a receipt from 2009? A dog brush? How about a scuba diving snorkel? (Love you, honey!)
Remember, when organizing your closet, if you’re keeping it because you’re gonna lose those ten pounds or because you paid a lot of money for it, (even though it makes you look like you’re pregnant!), it’s time to say “adios”! There’s a reason you’re not wearing it, so come clean! The other rule of “closet organization, by Barbara”, is that if you don’t get rid of stuff, there will never be room for more!
Before I bid you farewell for today, I hope you have been oohing and aahhhing over my updated header, thanks to the beautiful and talented Ann Marie of Cascade Valley Design. I’m sure she’d love to create something beautiful for you, too!
Thanks so much for visiting! Your comments make my day!,
Barbara
I’m craving a beautiful closet too, but the size of ours just can’t increase anymore. We already did that once, when we took room from the master bedroom to do it. I can’t wait to see yours after it’s redone. I’m going to be really jealous if it has a big island in the middle. I just saw a show on HGTV where Kris Jenner got her closet redone, along with here two teenage daughters. Wow! It was spectacular. Since we have relatively warm weather here year-round, my wardrobe all fits in our closet. I lost about 45lbs. two years ago and I got rid of all my fatter clothes. I’m such an organizational nut I had my husband redo our closet. I love the new hangers that are felt covered. You can just hang anything on them. Anyway…I’m going to live vicariously through you, if yours has a big island.
Hi Barbara, Thank you so much for the mention!!! I think your method works beautifully too. How wonderful to be getting hardwood floors and built-ins I would love that in my closet as well!! When I get in the mood to organize I dive in head first. I just did the same thing at my Mom’s house last week to help her out. I am much better at purging other’s items than my own, lol!! Thanks again for the mention.
Happy Thursday,
Kathysue
Bravo to you! Love your tips.
Ah, the master closet….you did a great job in my opinion…I’m striving for the same organization…neatness! Can’t wait to see your closet and bedroom all redone…should be fun!
Hi Donnamae and thanks for stopping by! (I told the hub’s this morning, how I love to wake up each morning, to see who said hi on my blog!) It’s a constant job to stay organized…but clutter plugs up my brain, so I usually keep it under pretty good control!
So many great tips here. Needing to do a little organizing in my closet this weekend…yours is looking great!!
Loved your post on monograms today!
Thanks so much for the mention, Barbara. I really enjoy working with you and on improving your site with all your great ideas.
