How to Recover Fido’s Bed August 2, 2011

Truth be told, dog beds don’t enhance your home’s decor…I hate them. Especially since our dog considers them to be a favorite chew toy! It doesn’t take long before they start looking pretty “ratty”.

See what I mean? So, I decided to recover the cedar bed insert, with some leftover fabric I had on hand.

The bed is 3 x 4 feet, so I cut the fabric 4 x 4 feet, to allow fabric for a Velcro flap.

In order to keep the seams from un raveling, I sewed French seams, which is accomplished by sewing 1/4 inch seams, around 3 sides of the bed, leaving the flap side open of course, with the right sides of the fabric facing out. (be sure to use straight pins throughout this whole project, to keep fabric where it should be) Now, turn the bed wrong side out and sew 3/4 inch seams around those same three sides. When finished, turn it right side out again and the French seams will be nice and finished on the inside.

Then, I turned the flap fabric back to the half way point, wrong sides out. Create sort of a pocket seam that you’ll then be able to turn right side out, to create the flap.

Now cut and place matched Velcro pieces across from each other. Pin and sew Velcro in place.

Insert bed pad and Voila!..Fido’s fashionable new chew toy is finished!
