Java Gel Stain, to Transform Your Cabinets January 9, 2014
On a scale of 1 to 10, this project requires a skill level of about a two, with zero being the easiest!
The toughest part, is to remember to stir the gel and then not get it all over yourself. It’s an oil based product, so I wear rubber gloves! That’s if I remember to put them on!
There are 3 steps involved:
1. Remove hardware and clean cabinet doors and drawers, inside and out with TSP cleaner. Let dry for an hour.
2. Apply gel stain, in long strokes, with the grain. I used a foam brush. Some people paint it on and wipe it off, applying several coats. What’s the point in that? Not sure. If you don’t wipe off excess, let it dry over night.
3. If you want a darker finish, repeat #2.
4. Wait 48 hours and apply the High Performance Top Coat. I would apply 2 coats, over your most well used cabinet doors. This prevents scratches and fading.
Oops! I said that there were only 3 steps. I lied!
How else can you update your old cabinets, for less than one or two hundred dollars?
Seriously!
Wow, very nice! Are you selling this in the store?
And have you used it on furniture pieces?
Hi Linda. There’s no reason it wouldn’t work well on stained furniture. I’m not sure yet about painted surfaces. Its in stock for $24 a quart. Hope you’re doing good!
Have you tried this over paint or an old finish without sanding or stripping it off?
I haven’t tried it over paint, Scottie. It works fine over a stained surface with a varnish of some kind, without a problem. I need to experiment over paint.
I am always for easy!!!..Looks great Barbara….have a great weekend!
Works for me too! Take care, Shirley!
So…you don’t have to sand? Great! Enjoy your weekend! 😉
No sanding required, but a quick swipe never hurts. 🙂
looks stunning great job
