Before and After, Using Gesso October 31, 2014

I was so lucky to get my hands on this table! What a treat! The Furniture Angels are being very kind to me! I knew that this would be the perfect piece to use gesso on.

As is usually often the case, I neglected to take a “before” picture of this little treasure. This photo was taken after two or three coats of gesso had been applied. It was just a bit brighter butter yellow before. The poor top had been neglected/abused. Use your imagination and think “water rings”.

Gesso is a powder, that you mix with water, one to one, to add depth to a piece of furniture. It dries as a sort of plaster, and softens the edges on heavily molded pieces. I’m sure that there are many uses, but in this case, I wanted to give this table the appearance of many layers of paint, over the last hundred years. When painting the gesso on, be sure to lay your piece horizontally, so the gesso doesn’t run.

I found it a bit challenging at first, to apply the first coat of the One Step paint. The paint seemed to re-activate the gesso, making it easy to “pull” if I wasn’t careful. The second coat was much easier.

The chalk based paint was followed by a milk paint in a slightly lighter shade of white, and then sanded and waxed.

There are times when the old cell phone camera doesn’t do a piece justice and this is one of those times!

And how about the gorgeous antique mirror, that just arrived this week?!

I hope you’ll stop by soon! And don’t forget….
