Updating a Brick Fireplace for Less Than $20! August 13, 2014
Well, hello there!
Today, I thought I would give you a peek inside the new Tahoe house! Remember, I told you about the curse of wallpaper, from the 80’s?
Well, here’s a shot of the wallpaper, in the largest bedroom, upstairs. But, let’s forget about the rolls and rolls of wallpaper that need to be removed. Pretend it isn’t there!
The red brick fireplace is a nice feature in the room, but I wasn’t crazy about the red part. So, I figured I had nothing to lose and decided to paint it. I had heard from the milk painting crowd I hang with, that brick is super porous and that milk paint will stick to it like glue.
I mixed the Miss Mustard Seed’s Grain Sack color lighter for this project. About 1 part paint powder, with 2 parts cool water. I avoided painting the grout, which was pretty easy to do.
This project ended up using a half a bag (4 ounces) of paint ($11) and I’ll go over the lower shelf with a sealant, to make it easy to clean, when ashes drop there.
There’s still room for tonight’s (Thursday’s) Revamp a Lamp class! 6-8 p.m. The lamp and all paint supplies are included!
Saturday’s class is a short one, but it covers Gel Stain Application for Cabinets. It’s at 1 p.m. and should only last an hour. You’ll paint a cabinet door with gel stain and find out just how easy it is to transform your kitchen cabinets, for next to nothing. Perfect if you plan to sell your home soon…or just moved in and replacing cabinets isn’t in the budget!

Oh, I love what you did with the fireplace! I’ve been wanting to paint ours forever…maybe I should just do it, and stop thinking about it! Did you paint the grout too? It looks like you painted it, brick by brick. Is milk paint heat resistant? So many questions…but it really looks fantastic! 😉
Hi Donnamae, Yes, you can do this! No I didn’t paint the grout and milk paint is heat resistant. It will get dirty, like any other light colored surface, so I’m going to seal the bench seat of the fireplace, so it can be easily cleaned. Milk paint is not flammable. All natural ingredients. Wow…this looks great…never thought to use MMS milk paint on brick!…but makes sense due to its non-flammable qualities!…wish I lived close as I would attend that lamp class!!!
