Chalk Painted Buffet Gets Glazed August 2, 2013
Hello, dear friend!,
You may recall that a few weeks ago,a customer at the shop was downsizing. She brought a wonderful buffet to the shop, and it has slowly made a change for the better!
Here she is after just a quick topcoat, to test a color. The rest of her is wearing a blond faux crackle.
Solid as a rock, she weighs more than a Sumo Wrestler! I made a custom mix of Old Town Paint’s Mocha and Dark Gray. 50/50. I just put one cost on the sides and front and two coats on the top, for good measure.
After applying a coat of poly acrylic, I used a dark glaze as the final-final.
I think she may get a few dates, now that she’s wearing this great new outfit!
I had never glazed until a few months ago. I really like it and am going to experiment with different shades. It’s important to put a poly down first, or I’ve found that the glaze will act as a stain to the paint. With the poly on first, it’s as easy as painting the glaze on and wiping off as much as you want, with a wet sponge. Very cool!
Come meet her in person, at the shop, tomorrow, 10:30 til 4:30!
If I don’t see you, have a great weekend!!
What great character this cabinet has. She is awesome with her new finish! Love it, Barbara.
Oh, she’ll get dates alright…maybe even a steady beau! Enjoy your weekend! 😉
She is beautiful and I want to use the art of glazing more often. Excellent tip!

Beautiful job, as an artist in faux, trompe l’œil working in paints has come along way.
For so many years I have been making my own chalk paints handed down from my grandfather a studio producer for paramount movie picture studios, it was his work in art producing of sets that I discovered his brilliant techniques of old world art style in painting.
It’s just lovely to see the many artistic like bloggers out here.
Keep inspiring, see you soon.

This is beautiful! Question: Was this chalk paint? Did you use any wax or just the poly acrylic before the glaze?
Hi Liz,
I didn’t use wax on this “chalk job”. Just clear poly acrylic and then glaze. It’s my new favorite technique!
Happy painting!,
Barbara
I’m getting ready to start my first glaze project (an Italian Rococo Bedroom Suite – with nooks, crannies and crevices than you can imagine!) To say the project is a dozzy is an understatmed! Scared but excited… What brand of Poly acrylic is your favorite and why… I included the link to my Design Delimma’ which has more than 400 comments on HOUZZ… NOW I’m ready to take the plunge and educating myself… SO glad I found this!!! I would have put the poly as the finish coat had I not ran across this first.. And I was concerened that the metallic paint/glaze would do just what say it would, work like a stain, had I have done that! Thank YOU!!! Now, what poly brand was that you were going to share and is it spray or brush on? (Dear Lord… Let it be spray!…. Amen)
What did you use for the glaze?
When I glaze over paint, I always use a clear top coat first. I usually use General Finishes products, for the top coat and glaze.
I realize this is an old post, but am hoping you can still help me. I have an dated crackled table that I would like to redo. I noticed you did not state anything about sanding down your crackle before painting. Did it leave an uneven finish? Or did the paint fill in the cracked parts? It looks beautiful and smooth, which is the look I am going for also. Thank you for any information you can give me.
Hi, Yes, the crackle finish remained, but was not as noticeable, when painted. It created a smooth, yet textured finish. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
This piece is just beautiful. I have a buffet similar and would love to use this technique. I sell Old Town Chalk Paint in my shop. Please email me at midwaytreasures@bellsouth.net Thank you so much. Mary Lee Poss
