My Deal of the Week! May 25, 2012

This week, I made a great find, at Veranda Antiques, of course!

Having 6 sets of china, purchased or passed on to us by family, we certainly didn’t need another, but these were too great a deal to pass up and I love them! Just the dinner plates, TWELVE of them, for $90.00!!

I love the crest and in black and white, they’ll go with just about everything!

I’ve been using my blue and white Spode porcelain every day, for years now. Before that, I used a bone china for everyday. Never broke or chipped a plate! The Spode is not as tough as bone china. Just ask the two chipped plates I have at the bottom of the stack!

Plus, bone china is lighter than porcelain or ceramic options. I put it in the dishwasher even with the gold rim. There’s a “china” setting on the dishwasher and I figure they’ll outlive me by a few generations.

I don’t understand why newlyweds buy new china, when there’s so much beautiful used product on the market that looks brand new. (Do newlyweds still buy china?)

The reason I love china is because it sets such a beautiful table. You could serve fish sticks and tater tots and still feel elegant. Go ahead. If you have china, take it out of the back pantry and start using it. If you don’t have any, take a look at it, the next time you’re at an antique or estate sale. See how pretty it makes your table and you look!

Enjoy the weekend!,
Barbara

Lovely plates. They look beautiful with either of those chargers, which I also love. I have my grandmother’s china and when my sons got married 12 years ago, both of my DIL’s bought only everyday dishes. I gave my youngest son the Royal Dalton china I got when I got married. It was a service for 10. Six months later I found 10 more plates and miscellaneous pieces for just $60 at an antique shop. (I guess that means I’m an antique too.) I’ve only got two sets of china but I just don’t have room to store more. Yours were a great deal!

Barbara those plates are beautiful, I wouldn’t have passed them up either! Enjoy your weekend!

Beautiful dinner plates Barbara! Who could pass up that kind of a find? Not me! Problem is, plates don’t squish in a china cabinet like clothes can in a closet. I’m much more a dish girl than clothes horse 🙂 I have two sets of china, my favorite being the Wedgwood Nantucket pattern. All white and can pair with anything. Love setting a pretty table. Enjoy yours with a nice dinner. Or a fish stick 🙂

I never understood when people said they were saving it “for good”. I use my mother’s sterling at every meal and never hesitate to use any fabulous china I find. Why save it? I have arrived “at good” in my life so I plan to enjoy it all! I can see why you scooped this pattern up…fabulous!

Barbara, these are most elegant. Great find! I’m a fan of black and white, so these would have definitely come home with me. A recent thrifty find for me was a stack of 12 lovely china salad/dessert plates made in Poland. They are simple white with a gold rim and the most delicate ribbed scallop design on wide borders ~ a GW find at just a few $$. I’ve already used them several times for entertaining.
Thanks for sharing these beautiful plates. ~ Sarah
