Can you imagine how much beige carpet archeologists will find in land fills, a thousand years from now?

Seriously, one key reason for solid color, neutral, patternless carpeting in homes everywhere, is that just about anything placed on top of it will coordinate. Building a room’s decor, starts at the floor and builds from there.

Starting with a patterned carpet requires a little more planning, but the results, to me, are much more interesting. It’s just another reason why I choose solid colors for sofa upholstery, because you can sit a neutral colored sofa on top of just about anything. Keep in mind, when I say neutral color, or solid color, that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a texture in the fabric. Texture, as in corduroy, velvet, chenille, is always a good thing.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Just because you have a patterned rug, doesn’t mean you need to avoid pattern elsewhere. But it should be in smaller, coordinated doses. Decorative pillows and accent chairs are great places to bring in limited amounts of pattern. Remember, you’ll have art and accessories, reflective mirrors and beautiful lamps, to add to the mix, for added interest, before all is said and done.

Remember, when it comes to rugs, they should always be purchased “on approval”. You’ll never know for sure how an area rug will look, until it’s on the floor, in your home!
